This is a process of conditioning phase change materials (PCM’s), so they are in a qualified and ready to use state. According to ISTA 2022a, preconditioning is the process to bring a payload or thermal shipping system components(s) to a specified temperature condition by maintaining it for a specified temperature condition by maintaining it for a specific period in a conditioning environment. All products and components (outer shells, insulation, refrigerants, thermal buffers, dunnage, etc.) should be at their optimal temperature (throughout the product) before being assembled in the thermal packaging system. It can take several hours to days to reach temperature equilibrium throughout.
