Polymers that are partially or fully originate from plant sources primarily. These polymers reduce the use of fossil fuels and emit less pollution. The term “renewable” and “biobased” can be used interchangeably, and refers to the % of carbon that’s organic and comes from agricultural sources that the material or product is composed of. A true bioplastic material must contain at least 20% organic carbon by weight to qualify as a biobased material.
