A polymer that is produced by or derived from living organisms, such as plants wood, corn), animals (chitin), or microorganisms (genetically modified bacteria). A biopolymer is made up of repeating units of carbon-based back bone monomers. Different chemical structures can be added to the carbon polymer backbone to change its characteristics such as hardness and flexibility, based on its desired function.
