Vacuum insulated panels are a type of insulation used in the Cold Chain packaging industry. They have a porous interior core (slower conduction, increased insulation) and are wrapped in a membrane polymer or a metalized material. VIPs hold a vacuum in order to reduce convection. If the vacuum seal is lost from a puncture, much of the VIPs insulator capacity is reduced. Sometimes a layer of corrugated material is placed to line the VIP to help protect it from being punctured.
