(European Bioplastics definition) A mechanism for compensating all parts of the carbon footprint of a product through the process of prevention, release of, reduction in, or removal of an amount of greenhouse gas emissions in a process outside the product system. Examples include external investment in renewable energy technology, energy efficiency measures, or afforestation/reforestation. Offsetting is not permissible in carbon-footprint communication.
